Soft Landing graduate and independent dancer and choreographer, Natalie Abbott was a visiting artist as part of QL2’s 2014 Soft Landing program. During her stay at Gorman Arts Centre, Natalie worked with a group of 10 young dancers making the difficult transition between their Tertiary dance training and professional practice.
The Soft Landing program is designed to develop young dancers capacity to respond to creative challenges with professional rigour, choreographic intelligence and an awareness of context. Natalie Abbott and independent choreographer, Amelia McQueen worked with the dancers over the course of three weeks across a diverse range of technique and creative development workshops including contemporary, yoga, improvisation, ballet, choreography and live performance. Discussion was used as a constant educational tool, speaking their minds without waiting to be sure we are ‘right’. The three weeks culminated in a two public showings – including discussions – one at Gorman Arts Centre and the second at Belconnen Arts Centre.
Natalie Abbott graduated from dance at the VCA in 2007 as the recipient of the Orloff Family Trust Scholarship for most outstanding talent, and has since channeled her energies into creating visceral dance work; performing nationally and internationally with in Asia, Europe and America; and working with various independent choreographers and visual artists in Melbourne, the UK and New York. Her works include Ultimate Pressure (video and sensory immersion) Next Wave Festival (2010), Circles For Squares, Lucy Guerin’s Pieces for Small Spaces (2011), LEVITY – a video work, Blindside Gallery (2012), PHYSICAL FRACTALS, Next Wave Festival 2012, Dance Massive, Melbourne and PACT presents, Sydney (2013) and SWEAT, live art for Tiny Stadiums Festival (2013).
Natalie’s new work MAXIMUM has been developed through residencies at PACT in Sydney, Arts House (Culture Lab) in Melbourne and Lucy Guerin INC in Melbourne. The work will premiere early 2014 at Arts House in Melbourne for Next Wave Festival and tour to Avingon festival in France and to Sydney.
Natalie is an avid performer and choreographer constantly seeking to extend her craft through practice.
