ACT Writers Centre
The ACT Writers Centre offers a wide variety of writing workshops and seminars with local and visiting professionals, as well as collaborating with other organisations to run events. They host meet-the-author sessions and masterclasses with some of Australia’s best-known writers and most experienced editors, publishers and agents. They also run social events and fundraisers, and facilitate writing groups to help local writers meet their peers.
Since its inception the Centre has run a wide variety of programs including programs for young writers, writers with disabilities and writers from non-English speaking or Indigenous backgrounds. Their workshops span all levels of writing skill and interest, from beginner classes to advanced. The Centre has also held regional workshops as far away as Bega, Yass, Goulburn, Booroowa, Batemans Bay and Cooma.
ACT Writers Centre produces ACTWrite, a monthly magazine for members, which contains articles, tips and information about literary competitions, events and opportunities, locally and Australia-wide. They also offer a range of writers’ resources for purchase, loan or simply to take away. The Writers Centre provides advice on all things literary—from negotiating contracts to self-publishing. The Centre also refers writers and editors for employment, and part of their Invite-a-Writer program helps freelance writers, editors, speakers and teachers advertise their services.
The ACT Writers Centre hosts annual awards for poetry, short stories and published books.
