A performance ensemble for players AMEB 4+
Joining an ensemble group is a fantastic way for those who are already taking private lessons to meet like-minded players and hone their skills in a fun and friendly group environment. Music for Canberra’s experienced conductors who lead the ensemble groups will encourage you to expand and enrich your musical repertoire.
The Youth Brass Ensemble, conducted by music teacher and professional musician Zach Raffan, is open to players of approximately AMEB level 4+ or equivalent, or those who have at least 2-3 years experience learning privately. The Youth Brass Ensemble play a predominantly classical repertoire, with jazz and contemporary pieces mixed in for fun and variety.
Ensemble members may be asked to step into the Canberra Youth Orchestra or James McCusker Orchestra when the repertoire of those orchestras require a more full brass choir (members stepping into JMO or CYO may need to pass an audition; please talk to our office for further information about this process where relevant).
Music For Canberra believes strongly in the importance of performance in improving the self-confidence and musical ability of students of all ages, and Brass Ensemble participants who would like to are certainly encouraged to participate in concerts and other community events (but are under no pressure if they don’t wish to). The Youth Brass Ensemble performs at Music For Canberra concerts, sometimes performing along with our Junior Brass Ensemble in a mentor role and to achieve a more robust sound, and also takes part in other performances & special projects and workshops in the wider community, such as Floriade, the Multicultural Festival, and the Australian National Eisteddfod, as well as other community events.
