Workshop Recap: Crowdfunding your Creative Project

Tuesday, 15 December 2015

On Sunday September 13, we joined crowd-funding expert, Anna Maguire, in a jam packed two hour workshop at Gorman Arts Centre that illuminated the ins and outs of creating a successful crowdfunding campaign.

With over 25 years’ experience in publishing and digital strategy, Anna Maguire is Australia’s foremost crowdfunding expert and we are very pleased to have partnered with the ACT Writers Centre to present this workshop.

Key areas covered included understanding the different funding models and platforms available, how to plan for a successful campaign, how to market a campaign and things which can make or break a campaign.

In addition to focusing on successful campaigns, Maguire took participants through unsuccessful campaigns, explaining the various reasons why they failed and what can be learned from them. Even more importantly, Maguire used case studies to demonstrate how creators of unsuccessful campaigns were able to learn from their mistakes and still achieve a positive outcome.

Maguire’s approach to crowdfunding is optimistic, but pragmatic. She encouraged participants to engage in crowdfunding activities, but to be realistic about the outcome and what is involved. Here are some key points which were discussed:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Believe in your project, and make others believe in it too.
  • Crowdfunding is NOT free money, you need to work hard to achieve your funding goal.
  • Choose your funding model and platform wisely and according to your situation.
  • Do your research, and don’t skip the planning phase!
  • Once a campaign is live, you need to be able to manage it almost 24/7.
  • Communication is key.
  • The work doesn’t end once your goal is reached.

After the workshop ended, Maguire generously stayed back to answer questions and discuss things in more detail.  Everyone left with pages of notes and a lot to think about!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Anna for facilitating such a fantastic workshop, and for her professionalism, expertise and generosity.

Want to know more? We strongly recommend Maguire’s book, Crowdfund it!, published by Gorman Arts Centre resident, Editia Books, and available online for only $9.99. Crowdfund it! is one of the first publications of its kind, and is essential reading for anyone thinking of launching a crowdfunding campaign.
